The Hummingbird's Dance

2022 · Crazy Beast Studio, with Ben Durrant and JG Everest

My chapbook album — a hybrid form that asks both page and sound to carry the work. Recorded with composer-musician JG Everest and producer Ben Durrant, it is spoken word pressed against original composition until the two stop being separate things.

My poems in the album move through grief, survival, land, and the particular experience of being present in a world that has spent considerable effort making itself inhospitable to you. They are not quiet about any of this, but they are never without grace.

The Hummingbird's Dance (2022)

I come from the land of waiting / and the land has not forgotten / what it means to hold a name / inside a mouth that won't be still.

Crow Creek, Late Summer

Unpublished

The water remembers / what the maps refuse to say — / every bend a name / every name a wound / that kept breathing anyway.

What the Body Knows

Yellow Medicine Review (2018)

Before the word there was the weight of it. / Before the weight there was the thing itself — / not waiting to be named, just there, / the way a scar is there / long after the story has been told.
